Thales and Amelia form partnership to bring near-term improvements in the regional operator's environmental footprint

Feb 28. 2022  Thales and Amelia have agreed to work together to optimise flight paths and reduce the environmental impact of the regional airline's operations in the near term.

Optimising aircraft trajectories and flight operations is seen as one of the major ways of reaching the civil aviation sector's target of halving its emissions by 2050.

Thales and Amelia will work together to study the airline's flight data, using the Flights Footprint Estimator application developed by Thales to provide an objective impact analysis of the company's operations. The analysis will provide a clearer picture of flights and trajectories and propose optimised flight paths to bring near-term reductions in the regional airline's environmental footprint in line with its Amelia Green energy transition project.

The Flights Footprint Estimator is part of Thales's strategy of utilising advanced technologies to fight global warming. Based on the latest research and developed in cooperation with academic and industry partners, the application calculates the objective climate impact of the flight path of each aircraft, including potential CO2 emissions, NOx emissions and condensation trails.

Amelia is known for its agility and its pioneering role in sustainable aviation, and intends to leverage all available solutions in the short, medium and long term to contribute to the decarbonised air transport sector of the future. Thanks to its partnership with Thales and the optimisations proposed by Flights Footprint Estimator, Amelia expects to see improvements in the environmental impact of its French network by the end of 2022 and is planning a progressive roll-out to all the airline's flight operations.
